Big Changes at Molly O Designs!

I hope everyone had an amazing summer and is settling back into your normal routine!

Over the course of the summer some very exciting things have been developing at Molly O Designs. Some decisions have been made, and we think that this new change in direction for Molly O is going to be amazing for our customers and our company.

We are excited to announce that Molly O Designs will be offering all of our classes via our website beginning October 15th.

While this does mean we will no longer offer studio classes in the Las Vegas area, and I am sure many of our local customers will miss the social aspect of creating at Molly O Designs, we feel this is the best fit for our changing economy and the requests of our customers across the country.

So what does this mean exactly? This change means that not only will we offer all our existing classes as online video tutorials (many for FREE!). We will be adding over 100 new classes over the course of the next year. We have so many amazing ideas for classes, but many were not a good fit for the classroom. Now we can offer them online!

You will also be able to purchase all your favorite Molly O supplies via our website. We will be adding tons of new inventory in the next few months. And there are many new surprises coming too!

And we will finally be able to fulfill the request of our fans across the country that have not been able to take part in Molly O Designs and our classes.

In the mean time, our LAS VEGAS customers will be able to take part in an AMAZING SALE!!

We need to make room for the new inventory we will be carrying on our website. So EVERYTHING in our studio is on sale! Including all the tools that have been used during our classes. If you want to stock up, or purchase tools to use at home, now is the time to buy them!

Take a Break from Summer - Giveaway!

I don't know about the rest of the mommas out there, but summer is starting to get to me. The heat, the kiddos fighting about who looked at who funny, trying to work and be a stay at home mom, etc. The list goes on and on. I love being home with my kids, I swear! But sometimes you just need a little pick-me-up.

So I decided to create two sets of Glitter Clips to give away. The first set is our basic lined clips in all our fabulous glitter ribbon colors. This set can be used for little princesses, tweens, teens and even moms. We have tons of customers who make these to just clip back their hair for the gym or running errands. Nothing wrong with a little sparkle in your life.

The second giveaway is a full of glitter mini bows. Again, these really are perfect for any age. Bows are everywhere for Fall 2011. So, you can choose to share these with your girls, a friend or keep them all for yourself!

New charm love!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE when we get new supplies in the studio. I love it even more when I have time to make a little something for myself.

So I created this sweet and simple necklace for myself using our brand new 5/8" square disc. I added my kiddos initials using our 1/4" Fun Font and created a linear look. Although most stamped necklaces are typically designed using a cluster effect, I like to mix things up a little and create simple lines.

Glitter Ribbon Love!

Look what showed up in our mailbox today! I can't believe I didn't even check it until after 5 p.m. My poor little babies were sitting in the 105 degree heat all day. Too far? Well that is just how much I LOVE anything sparkly showing up in my mail box.

I couldn't wait until tomorrow to show you all the fun things we are going to make with this glittery little ribbon. Bows, headbands and embellishments galore!

First up, the neutrals. Silver, Brown and Black. I've already made myself one of each in a workout headband. You will see me sparkling from across the gym.

Then, for all my girly girls. Purples and Pinks! I can't decide which color I like more. They are just all so beautiful in person.

And then of course who could forget the jewel tones for fall, Peacock, Royal Blue and Red! You do know that jewel tones are the go to colors for fall right? If not, consider yourself educated. Now no excuses for not looking fabulous this fall!

I'm in LOVE with every shade of peacock right now. Just gorgeous. Remember when we use to call it Teal? "Are you aware that Fran has chosen teal for her bridesmaids? Teal, the color of gangrene!"
Name that movie and I'll send you a free yard of glitter ribbon in your color choice! Let's stick with calling it Peacock for fall, you will feel so trendy and less 80's.

Wedding Gift Idea

Wedding season is upon us and sometimes you want to give a little extra something special to the bride and groom. A gift they will always remember and cherish.

When 2 of my dear friends got married recently, I tried to think of something that was special and unique to them. My first thought was the fact that their new blended family would include 7 (yes, I said 7) children! Hmmm, 7 children. That would mean chaos, happy memories, more chaos, distractions, very little alone time and maybe a few moments of thinking "what was the plan again?" Oh yeah, love, marriage and happily ever after.

You see even the strongest of couples will have days where they will lose focus of their love and relationship. The daily grind and responsibility of a large family will overrun the drippy sweet, head over heals in love feelings of your courtship. So, I wanted to created something that would always guide them back to those first moments of falling in love and lust (hee hee). Something they could just look down at, take a deep breath from life's crazy moments and remember, oh yes, I love him/her so much and this journey is about us.

So I created matching key chains for them to carry with the exact Latitude and Longitude of the location where they were standing when her prince charming proposed. A map of sorts to guide them back to ever lasting love when life's crazy adventures take over. Or, maybe if they really need a break they can just plug the coordinates into their GPS, hop on a plane and go back to that place and time when the only thing that existed in their life was love and happiness. But something tells me, all they will have to do is look at each other to remember that moment forever.

Can anyone guess where he proposed? It is soooooo romantic (hint plug in the Lat/Long. on the key chain {wink})

You should write a book!

"You should write a book!" is the comment I get most often from my friends on Facebook. Not because of my literary genius or the naturally inspiring way my words seem to ebb and flow across the page. Nope. Not even close.

The comment "you should write a book" comes from the antics of my littlest munchkin. She is my youngest and the most independent, fearless, boundary pushing, willful and determined child that has entered our family. I say God saved her last for a reason. I think it is either to drive me slowly insane or so she can be the President of the United States.

Look how funny I am mom! What can I do to taunt you today?

I bet you $5 I can put something in my mouth or nose that will REALLY scare you!

Who Me?! I didn't do anything, I SWEAR! Look how cute I am, seriously!

I have a great new story to share. One that couldn't possibly be typed in a limited format such as facebook or twitter. Oh no, this story needed the attention of a word processing program that is equipped with spell check and unlimited characters.

First, I feel like I need to give you a little back story.

Let me show you our lovely little playroom that resides in the Molly O Designs studio. There are toys, furniture, books, puzzles and this enchanting little house shaped tv cabinet. Cute isn't it? Little cubbies and storage areas. I could see kids putting their toys and stuffed animals inside.

Sounds lovely doesn't it? Yes, oh yes it does sound lovely.

MOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM!!!! (insert hysterical screaming)

You see a few weeks ago, I took my little munchkin to work with me. She was happily playing in our little playroom when she got the amazing idea in her little head to try and fit in that cubby. What I saw when I came around the corner was one leg, one arm and a head sticking out of that circle. That's right. Go ahead and try to get a picture in your mind. 5 year old. One arm. One leg. Head.

Now I'm going to admit something here. My very first instinct was to run back out and grab my camera. It was only a split second, but I will make every mother in America feel better just knowing it passed through my mind. Bad mom. My next thought was, NOW what?! My third thought was, "OH SH&T, I'm going to have to call the fire department!" Luckily, I was able to gently pull her out one limb at a time. I'm sure the screams were heard by all the other companies in the building. I'm no longer on the invitation list for the building Christmas party. I also felt like I should call my OB/GYN and say thank you for my smooth deliveries.

Please note, only a small bear SHOULD be able to fit in this area.

She was safe and I'm sure this won't be the last time I will be telling one of these stories. I'm just thankful she was alright and I didn't have to try and explain to the fire department why I was taking pictures of my child being removed from a tv cabinet.

She is lucky she is so cute and sweet. Those brown eyes will make you forget about almost anything. And thanks to Facebook, everything will be well documented to share with her children someday.

Happy Birthday Dr. Suess!

My daughter's school is celebrating reading week in honor of Dr. Seuss and his birthday. So I thought I would whip up a few little things for her to wear with her uniform. It's not often you get get to accessorize in a catholic school, so we jumped at the chance.

Each day has a theme and today you had to wear a button that everyone could read. Well, I don't know if you have gone looking for buttons that are appropriate for a little girl to wear to a catholic school, but it is not an easy task. Party Girl and WTF! buttons weren't exactly what we were looking for.

So, while watching Bethany Ever After (oh, yes I did and loved every minute of it!) I decided to whip a little something up. No need to critique the lack of perfection on this button. It was the thought that counted and my daughter was beaming when she left the house this morning.

But, we needed a little something else too. You can't celebrate ~~Dr. Suess'~~, ~~Dr. Suesses'~~, oh wait, Dr. Suess's (yes I had to look it up) birthday without a red and white hat. But since they weren't allowed to wear hats today, I came up with this quick and simple little hair clip.

She was happy as a cat that swallowed a canary (too far?). Well, she was smiling and proudly walked into school sporting her Dr. Suess accessories. If anyone is interested in a quick photo tutorial on how to make this clips, just let me know and I will post it.

So, today is my birthday (forever 29!) My sweet husband surprised me by taking the day off so I could be relieved of all mommy duties for the day. And then the heavens opened and the angels sang. At least that is what it felt like.

Having a day without motherly duties feels like the biggest splurge. I will openly admit that I have NEVER taken a girls weekend away from my kids. I have only been away overnight with my husband a few times in 9 years. I know, not a great habit to fall into. So you can imagine how great it is to have the day off from packing lunches, doing homework, wiping noses and cleaning up bodily functions.

I started to think about what other splurges I might like if money was not an issue. I'm talking totally senseless, un-needed, waste of money purchases. The things you would never buy for yourself because it just doesn't make sense, but if someone were to just give them to you giddiness would be sure to follow.

My first thought was Harry Connick Jr. I have had a celebrity crush on Harry since I was 12. Go ahead and laugh, but can you imagine Harry sitting at a piano just singing to you? I would pay some serious cash for that! Hello darlin' (said in his New Orleans accent).

O-kay, maybe something a little more reasonably priced. How about this adorable little bauble. At $198 it is definitely a mommy splurge that has no purpose. But, seriously is this not cute?! My kids would steal it and lose a piece within the first 30 minutes of owning it, I'm fairly sure.

I could go on and on. But I don't want to bore you to death. Plus my cuter then Harry Connick Jr. husband just made me Crab Legs for dinner and promises cake after, not to mention an entire bottle of wine to myself. Why am I talking to all of you?!

I know we have been teasing you for awhile about our exciting news! It just took us a little longer then expected to get everything all settled. But we are finally ready for our big reveal!

Introducing the NEW Molly O classroom and studio! We recently moved our studio and offices downstairs from the location where we have been for the last year. When we saw this space, we knew it would be perfect for our customers! Yes, the space is cozy and comfy.........................

And we have our own entrance and no one around who will hear us banging and creating.

But that is not the best part! (All the moms, this part is for you!)

We have our own Playroom for the KIDS!!!!

That's right! You can bring your kiddos to any of our morning classes and let them play while you sit, visit and create! They can watch a movie, play with the toys, sit at the little table and read a book.

And the best part is that they can see you and you can see them! What a great way to be able to get out of the house during the day and talk to some other grown ups! We LOVE this class. There are so many ways to wear this fabulous flowers. And they are so quick and easy to make. Our new Molly O Fab Flower class is being launched during our Molly O Mondays.

We are finally launching our new Applique Class and I couldn't be more excited! This is such a great class for everyone, beginner to advanced.

Learn all the basics of applique without a sewing machine! That's right, everything is done by hand. You will learn to create beautiful one-of-a-kind designs that will be uniquely yours. Make something for yourself or as a gift. We have designs for babies, toddlers, girls, boys and even moms.

In every Molly O class we always have at least one superstar. I love these women! They take what they learn and run with it. Go above and beyond what you expected. Some just go crazy with it. And that is when I LOVE to share what they have done.

Look at Super Star Natalie! She took our Boutique Bow class with the intent on making adorable bows for her little girl. Instead she made HUGE quantity of bows to give out to all the little girls competing in her daughter's pageant. What a great gift! Can you imagine receiving these in your goody bag? The best part is that it was inexpensive and left an impression on all the girls and moms that received them.

Who Is Your Target Audience?............Surprise, You Are Wrong!

I'm always trying to define our Target Audience in order to grow our business. Often when I do an interview the question comes up, "who is your Target Audience." Every time I think that I have it figured out, I get a great surprise!

When we first began Molly O Designs, we defined our target audience as 20 - 30 something year old moms. Moms with small children. Then we did a class for a group of retired women, and then a group of single girls, and then a bridal party and then a 12 y.o. girls birthday party. Hmmmmm, I guess our audience is bigger then we thought. The lines of our audience were no longer clearly defined.

Nothing makes me more excited then to see a "new" audience at one of our classes. Last night we have a great little surprise in the form of 12 y.o. Devin.

Devin arrived with his mom, took one look at all the tools involved with our Stamped Jewelry class and got to work designing. It was so great to see his creativity mixed with that typical boy infatuation with tools. Hammers, steel stamps, pliers and bench blocks, it doesn't get more manly then that. Well a maybe a little more manly, but this class definitely jumps the line between crafting and tool time.

At the end of class he had made 4 charms in total and added them all to a very "manly" leather cord. The perfect look for a pretty cool young man. (Look at proud mama Sophie in the background!)

Great job Devin! And go tell all your friends how cool and "manly" it is to take a ~~crafting~~ tool pounding class at Molly O!

It makes my heart sing with joy when my children pick up one of my skills or passions. I try not to push or force them to do the things I love. But when they show interest on their own, it turns me into a very proud mama.

The other day, my oldest daughter picked up a discarded piece of a skirt that was laying on the cutting area floor. I had just transformed my friends skirt into a sun dress for her 2 y.o. daughter. But there was a piece left over that was about to go in the trash. When my 8 y.o. saw it, she just had to have it!

So she found a needle and thread and went to work. It brought a little tear to my eye *sniff*. Proud Mama moment.

She worked and worked on that little piece of fabric. I finally asked her what she was making. "A new dress for my American Girl doll. She is feeling sad." Hmmm, o-kay. But why is she sad I asked?

Because of what Gabriella did to her. Gabriella is our 4 y.o. and is (clearing throat) very spirit.

O-kay, tell me how your little sister made your American Girl sad...................................

Lose the Mom Uniform - Part II {Find Something That Fits!}

So who took out their ponytail? I know several of you ran from me in the grocery store, target and school pickup for fear of me seeing your “mom ponytail.” I didn’t mean to scare you, well maybe I did a little. I just wanted to inspire you to become a more fabulous “you”.

So, we took out the ponytail in Lose the Mom Uniform, Part 1. Or, at the very least added adorable hair accessories to make your pony look effortlessly stylish. Check. Next up, let’s find something that fits!

Chant the following to yourself over and over until you believe it, “I don’t care what size I wear, I don’t care what size I wear, I don’t care what size I wear.” Now that doesn’t mean you should go eat an entire bag of Cheddar Cheese Ruffles (not that I’ve ever done that) and start wearing stretchy pants. What I want you to understand is that you need to find clothing that fits. Not clothing that you think SHOULD fit.

I see so many women that look larger, frumpier and saggier then they really are simply because their clothes don’t fit. If you can get it on, it doesn’t always mean it fits. I for example can snap a pair of jeans 2 sizes smaller then I actually wear. But I can’t breath and the muffin top that appears could feed a small country for a year.

So here is your assignment. I want you to put on an outfit that you wear but deep down know it is a little snug. Take a picture of yourself. Just stand in front of the mirror and snap your photo.

Now find an outfit that actually fits and take a photo. The waistband does not press in at any point nor does it fall down to your hips because it is too big. Find a shirt with a nice fit and some structure (Structure is Part 3 of this series). What I mean by structure is a shirt that creates your shape for you, not a fitted T-shirt that clings to your frame. Or one so big that it creates a mono-tent over your curves. Too tight does not make you smaller. Just like too big doesn’t cover your flaws, it just makes you look even bigger.

Now, compare the two photos you just took. You should see a noticeable difference in your shape and size. When clothes actually fit, you look slimmer and more polished. If you are really brave, you will send me the photos and let me post them on the blog for inspiration. Come on, don’t you want to inspire the 10’s of moms that read my blog?

If you didn’t have anything in your closet that fits, then you need to go shopping. This is wear you chat again “I don’t care what size I wear”. Take 2 or 3 sizes into the dressing room with you. Don’t look at the tag just try them on until something fits.

One last thing about finding clothing that fits. I’m not just talking about your pants and shirts. Don’t forget about your undies and bra too! We have all watched Oprah and have seen what a great fitting bra can do for you. It can takes pounds off your silhouette! So do me a favor and lift up your girls in support. I promise they will thank you.

Remember, nothing says mom uniform (or Jersey Shore want-a-be) like clothes that don’t fit. We all want to be a smaller size, but in the mean time dress for the body you have now and you will look amazing regardless of your size.

If You Do One Thing This Year.........Lose the Mom Uniform!

I’ve decided to throw out my Mommy Uniform! You know the one that someone was handing out at the hospital on the post-partum floor? Except, I don’t remember actually receiving a bag with a mommy uniform, it just kind of appeared in my closet.

Maybe they handed it to my husband while I was checking out. Yes, that must be it. And since nothing else in the closet fit when I got home, I just accepted it for what it was. A rather depressing glimpse into the beginning of my new image.

Before my children, I prided myself on wearing fabulous clothes, shoes, accessories. Other women would ask where I shopped and if I would teach them to accessorize. But some how in the midst of having 3 kids in 4 years (yes, you heard me right) I transformed into a sweatsuit wearing, ponytail sporting, non-accessorized person. I’m not even going to say “women” because there is nothing womanly about how I was feeling. How the heck did I get here, and how am I am going to get out?

So I decided to lay down a few rules for myself. Should be easy, right? I did mention already that I have 3 kids under the age of 8? On second thought, maybe I will just buy a velour sweatsuit from Costco in every color they make.

No, no, no! I’m going to do this. Back to the rules. We will be assigning one rule in each segment of my blog posts. I want to give you a little time to adjust to each rule. Remember I’m on your side. I am one of you. My muffin top doesn’t look any better in low-rise jeans then any other mom. But I promise you, at the end of this series we will reclaim the right to feel and look fabulous together. It will be a transformation that is long overdue and greatly deserved.

Rules for Designing Our New Mommy Uniform

1. Ponytails are not allowed unless someone in the household is vomiting, the water has been shut off because I forgot to pay the bill (I’m not super woman after all!) or my 3 year old has decided to cut my hair while I am sleeping.
Take a minute and do something with your hair. I promise you will feel so much better!Last year I got a sassy new haircut and donated my hair to locks of love. I will tell you that I feel as cute as possible from 6:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. This is a first for me. If you are too afraid to cut your hair then buy or make a few trendy hair accessories. My current favorite hair accessories are flowers worn off to the side and headbands with vintage buttons, brooches and feathers.
The best way to wear hair accessories is to keep everything else you are wearing simple and chic. Let your accessory be your focal point.

If the accessories are scaring you, then just start with wearing your hair in any style besides a ponytail. Just one day! You can do it.

Cheer Flip Flops!

One of the things that just makes my day is when I receive emails and photos from customers wanting to share their newest designs. I love that they take the tools and techniques they learn in their Molly O class and add their own creative spin.

Just look at these adorable flowers that our friend Lina made during the {Fabulous Flowers} class! A few for her and a few for her little girl. She was going to rock the adorable fuschia flower at a wedding. Talk about spicing up your little black dress! Just throw a flower in your hair and transform your look.

I can't even tell you how much I love these key chains from Shelley! She used our 50% off charm bin as her inspiration and created these amazing gifts! I was so inspired after seeing them that I created a necklace with the same vibe.

What Is Your Resolution?

I can't believe that 2010 is just around the corner and so are those pesky New Year's resolutions. Why not, come up with a creative resolution this year to learn a new skill. One that can be passed down through generations. Get out of your comfort zone and try something new.

Creative Ladies!

I taught the Molly O Stamped Jewelry class last night to one of the nicest group of ladies. We had a great time and everyone walked away proudly with their new designs.

One of my favorite things about our classes is seeing all the amazing creativity that comes out of everyone. Most start our classes a little hesitant. We hear over and over, I'm just not that creative, or I have never done something like this before. And by the end, they are all giggling over their designs and showing them off.

But what I love even more then seeing the designs at the end of the class, is getting photos of what everyone is making. It just makes my heart sing. Kind of like a proud mama. So I just had to show you the adorable photo that came in last night even before I got home.

Laureen was the hostess for the evening and came up with this amazing design to give her mom for Christmas. She decided to combine sterling silver with copper and then use our texturizing effect on both. I think the result is chic and super sweet! What Grandma wouldn't get a little teary -eyed on Christmas morning opening this Creatively Made gift?!

Keep up the creative spirit and keep sending those pictures! I can't wait to see what everyone is working on for the gift giving season!

12 weeks until Christmas

Did I scare you? Because I am scaring myself! But with everyone on a tight holiday budget this year, I thought that we should start planning ahead!

The first thing to think about is whether you are going to buy or make most of your Christmas gifts this year. My plan is to make as much as I can for friends, neighbors, teachers and relatives. There are so many quick and easy gifts that you can make for very little money. My plan is to make a list, set aside a Saturday and just mass produce all my Creatively Made gifts.

Some of our customers who followed Molly O Designs as a upscale children's boutique line are a little confused about what Molly O Designs (MOD) is all about today. We have indeed changed our vision but feel that it is the most amazing change we have ever made.

Those of you that have been attending our in home classes, know all about MOD. Many of you have attended almost every class we offer and are waiting for more. But since not everyone has a MOD stylist in their area to tell them the wonders of the new Molly O, we thought we would give you a little recap.

Yes, I'm on a Rachel Zoe kick. Love that show. And I secretly dream of having her dress me and give me that look before she says.................."ba-na-nas!" For those of you that don't watch RZ, that means that you look amazing.

So when this little design came together, the first words out of my mouth were bananas! LOVE, love, love this top. Love the flower brooch and the sprinkle of swarovski crystals.

The absolutel best part about this top is that it was created as one of our Molly O classes! We are on a flower kick for fall. These fabulous little accessories are being worn in the hair, on shirts, as shoe embellishments and even as jewelry. And they are so much fun to make!!

It's all about the shoes ladies..............

If you have been to one of our Molly O Designs classes, then you know that our stylists are big on empowering women to bust out of "mommy mode" when it comes to your appreance.

In the coming weeks, we will start a serious of quick tips of how to break out of your mommy style and create a fabulous new look on a budget. You don't have to break the bank or spend hours getting ready. It's the little things that add up.

One of my favorite "go to" items when I need a little boost is a funky and fabulous pair of shoes! Now, here is the Molly O Style rule....... DO NOT pair funky/colorful/crazy/zany shoes with other prints, accessories and all over stuff going on in your outfit.

Take a simple white button down shirt, a great pair of jeans and throw on a pair of shoes like this.

The shoes will pop and I promise that you will have other mommies checking out your new style. I know, I know a few of you are looking at these shoes and thinking, NO WAY! But I promise under a long pair of dark denim jeans they are fabulous. And the best part? They were only $10!!! They just got a lot cuter, didn't they?

If this is too much of stretch for you, then just start off with a great pair of red flats for fall. Pair them with a pair of black pants, a great flitted tshirt and a denim jacket. Add on one of our new Molly O flower brooches to the jacket or your hair and you are ready for anything.

Again, keep it simple on top and let your shoes do the walking.

Molly O Customers Are the Best!

Can I just brag for a minute? Seriously, I love it when a customer comes back to show me what they are up to after taking one of our classes. I feel like a proud momma!

Ellen came up with this stunning wedding shower gift. Can you imagine opening this at your wedding shower? I don't think I would ever take it off. She included the bride and groom's name, their wedding date and even included charms that matched their wedding colors. Ahhhhh.

And if that wasn't enough, then she made necklaces for all the little boys that were coming to her son's birthday party! Who said our classes were just for girls! The little boys wearing these necklaces are probably the "big man" on the playground even as I type. So cute and hip!

A Little Something for Mom and Baby

So often when you go to a baby shower, all the gifts revolve around the baby. But what about the mom? Sometimes she needs to be spoiled too. After all, she is doing all the work.

What better way to celebrate a new baby then to celebrate the mommy as well. We put together a grouping of classes that create the cutest baby gift ever! You can take one class or take them all.

So here is a list of classes that were featured in this sweet gift.

Boutique Baby Burp Cloths
I think moms should get to carry fashion forward burp cloths if they are going to be slung on their shoulder for the first 6 months.

Baby Pouch
Throw in a few diapers and a pack of wipes and you are ready to run. I have to admit that I still use mine with my older kids. Sometimes it is an extra pair of pants/undies for my 3 y.o. or a few little snacks for the older kids. It is more of an everything pouch.

The neighborhood cutie

I was trying to hold off on posting pictures of our new fall classes until everything was ready to be released. But seriously, I saw this face on my screen and just couldn't wait to show everyone.

He is the neighborhood cutie patootie and his poor mom had to drag him over to the photoshoot as soon as he woke up from his nap. And all of us moms know what 2 1/2 year olds are like when they get up from a nap.

But this little guy just stuck his little hand in his pocket, gave me a grin and approximately 3 minutes later the photoshoot was over.

I guess I should also point out his cute shirt which is one of our new Molly O Fall classes (more to come in the next week!). But seriously, look at that face! I would adopt him but I don't think his mom would appreciate that very much. In fact, we have already married him off to my youngest so I guess that would be a little weird if he came to live with us now. But just think how cute my grandkids will be one day!

Just for Mom!

Running Molly O Designs leaves me very little time to do things for myself. While my customers are sporting the hottest/latest/greatest designs, it is difficult to find time to make something for myself.

So I decided to take a few minutes this morning to make myself a present. Afterall, don't all of us moms deserve to give ourselves a present every once in awhile? I say, absolutely!

One of my favorite classes right now is our Molly O Stamped Jewelry class. I love it because once you get the hang of stamping, you can stamp out one of these beauties in a few minutes. And let me tell you that this skill comes in very handy when you are about to run out the door for a friend's birthday party :)

So here is what I came up with for myself. I wanted something a little different from the basic circle charms. Using a rounded square sterling silver charm, I stamped all three of my monkie's nicknames. Then on the skinny sterling rectangle I added on their birthstones with swarovski crystals.

I love how it turned out and I feel very chic with it on. Who knew just a necklace could make you feel sassy and chic! As I like to say, Sassy Made Simple!

My Peeps

Let me start this post by professing that I have zero ability or talent when it comes to art. I mean it, I can't draw, paint, sculpt, make playdough figures, none of it. My son often breaks down in tears when he asks me to draw something and it looks like a 2 y.o. did it.

So, when I started out on this little project I was pretty sure the end result was going to be something from night of the living dead. But, if I do say so myself (patting myself on the back in surprise) they are pretty darn cute. Or at least my kids want to play with them and aren't having nightmares from looking at them.

First, is a little necklace for my 3 y.o. She is a tomboy one minute and pretty princess they next. But she loves this necklace!

I know it isn't perfect, but hey it was my first attempt and if you squint your eyes and stand back 20 feet you'll never notice.

So then I decided that we needed an entire posse. And what is a posse of peeps without a little diversity. Since our family knows a little something about that, I started to mix a variety of tones for skin and hair.

Notice the necklace doll has a loop to string a satin necklace or ribbon through. The rest I left as little dolls because my kids couldn't wait to play with them.

And of course, we had to throw in a few boys. And if one just happens to look a little like my sweet husband it is probably just a coincidence.

Or maybe not.................hehe

Next up is making a little house for them all to live in. And don't worry, I will be posting all the instructions on how to make these sweet little peeps as soon as I can figure out how to paint and take pictures at the same time.

Nothing makes me smile more (besides my kids and hubby) then pictures of kids wearing a Molly O creation! Those emails just make my day, especially when the photographer is the mom of said cutie patootie.

And then she goes and does this. I LOVE it when my kids pick dandelions for me. They are still at the age where they think they are really flowers.

Back in the Blogging Saddle

I feel like I fell off the blogging horse. Business is booming at Molly O Designs and it is taking me a little while to get into my marketing groove. So much to do, so little time. But I have a plan, and I swear I am going to stick to it.

I promise not to leave you hanging again. My "goal" is to write my blog posts at the beginning of the week and have them ready to roll each morning. Sounds easy enough. So, I start to brainstorm topics so that I could stay ontop of this task. Hmmmm.....{birds chirping}. Yeah, I got nothing.

Then I remembered all the cool stuff that has been arriving at our studio! Fun. Anyone want to run their fingers through 10,000 crystals?! I'm telling you, it is fabulous. I was a little tempted to scatter them and pretend to be a Victoria Secret Angel on their famous runway, but quickly realized that they fact that I don't weigh 98 lbs. would probably cause all the crystals to crush into tiny pieces of dust.

Creatively Made Mother's Day

Now I'm not naming names, or pointing fingers, but there was a Mother's Day not too long ago where a certain husband worked all day and did not get a gift for the mother of his children. Did I mention those 3 children were all born in 4 years time and that she had been changing diapers for 7 years straight? All I have to say is that it is a good thing he is such a nice guy and a good dad, not that I know him or anything like that.

But I've decided that there is nothing wrong with celebrating yourself as a mother. If that means buying yourself a gift in appreciation of all you do for your family, then go for it! Is there anyone more deserving of a gift then a mother? I think mother's should be able to buy themselves a gift on a daily basis.

So in that spirit I thought I would post a few gift ideas that you can either make for yourself or for another mother in your life.

Seriously, this is by far my new favorite invitation web site. www.pingg.com It is so chic and easy to use. The perfect tool for all our creative ladies.

What I love is that although they have hundreds of trendy invitation designs that are ready to be emailed to your friends with just a few clicks, you can also design your own. And I'm not talking about cheesy clip art photos and unattractive colors. I mean, design something that is personal and all about your event. Just the Girls

I love a girls night out! Especially when it involves friends, wine, chatting and of course a creative energy.

We held a focus group class this week to get feedback on the new Molly O look, classes, concepts and vision. I can't tell you how much I adore and appreciate the ladies that attended. I limited the attendance to 6 so we could focus on what needed to be accomplished. You wouldn't believe the great advice and suggestions that I got from these women! I've been frantically working every since trying to implement the improvements that resulted from our class. Often times, I get so caught up in the my ideas that I forget that not everyone thinks the same way that I do. I got the perfect combination of positive feedback and constructive criticism.

It was so great to watch as everyone started to have those "that's how you do that!" moments. What fun to teach my friends the secrets and tips that I have learned along the way. My friend Julie even went home at 10 p.m. and made more bows! She has 4 girls at home, so she needed to get started. LOL. I love it, and can't wait to see her girls in all their bow glory.

Our next focus group will be in 2 weeks! This week we focused on our basic bow class. Next up is our flip flop class. Perfect timing for this beautiful weather we are having in Vegas. I will be limiting the class to 6 people again. So drop me a note if you want to attend.

It's all about the bling........

I know, I know, I need to rein it in when it comes to bling. But how can you not love things adorned in Swarovski crystals?! I love to sprinkle them on everything from my girl's bows to the throw pillows in my newly decorated living room (pictures to come!).

So, when I saw some cute crystal converse shoes in my local children's boutique, I just couldn't resist blinging out my new Ed Hardy sneaks. O-kay, they look a little over the top. But I swear that if you put them on with some cute jeans and a solid black or white top, you have a really cute outfit! That is the key to bling. Keep it to one item and one item only. Don't wear a bling tshirt, with bling jeans with bling shoes. Then you just look like you have been living in Vegas too long.

Of course I had to make a pair for my girls. This time I added in some black polka dots using jet black crystals and made the matching shoe laces. We get stopped every where we go when they are sporting their bling high tops. I think these would be adorable for pageants as well.

National Autism Day

Today is National Autism Day. It is amazing to me that autism was almost unheard of just 10 years ago except for people's narrow perception from the movie Rain Man. And now, we have a day and month dedicated to awareness.

But I still think that many people don't truly understand what autism is. Or for that matter what the children look like that are diagnosed with this disease. Could you pick out a child in the grocery store that has autism? How many times have you looked a mother because her child was screaming or throwing a tantrum in the store? I have been on both ends. From thinking that a mother needs to get her child under control, to later being glared at and even asked to leave church because my child could not keep it together. Trust me, you feel the need to run away and punch that person in the face all at once. And then head straight to confession. LOL.

Let me show you what Autism looks like. Meet my sweet son Clay (right) and his friend JC (left). Are they the cutest little 5 y.o. boys you have ever seen?! Both were diagnosed with Autism around the age of 3. They have been in school together since that time and have both grown by leaps and bounds. When they are together, they make you laugh until you cry.

They both have an obsession with legos and Star Wars. Put a new lego catalog in front of them that features star wars sets, and they are in heaven. Where speech use to elude them just a few short years ago, and eye contact was non-existant now comes excited chatter and sparkling eyes describing each star wars character and whether they are on the good side or dark side.

In the fall they will both be transitioning into a mainstream kindergarten class. But this new achievement did not come easily. You may remember that I shared my story of Clay's diagnosis last year during Autism Awareness Month. It feels like a million years ago that he was diagnosed and yet it has flown by. I wish now I had kept track of the countless hours spent doing therapy with him at him, taking him to speech therapy, occupational therapy, etc. But I guess the journey isn't as important as the destination.

Our destination often changes and new goals are set. But we are getting there! My neighbor said to me recently, "are you sure the doctor gave him the right diagnosis?" Yes, I'm sure. But to see him today he is a completely different kid. We still have some hiccups. And will probably continue to face new challenges. But thanks to following my mother's instinct and screaming my head off at our peditrician (it went a little something like this, "Something is not right with my baby, I just know it! He is 2 and he can't talk! I scream his name and he doesn't hear me" Her response, "my brother didn't talk until he was 4, let's wait a year." Mommy instinct kicks into high gear, "NO, YOU WILL GET ON THE PHONE RIGHT NOW AND FIND SOMEONE THAT CAN TEST HIM AND FIND OUT WHAT IS WRONG.") We never went back to that pediatrician. Though my husband gets to see her at work. Oops. Sorry honey. But sometimes the momma lion just has to take care of business.

Point being, mommy instinct and early intervention are key to this epidemic. The earlier you find out (even if you don't want to know) the sooner you can start helping and pull these kids out of their secret world and into ours. And I'm so happy we were able to do that for Clay. I just can't imagine my world without him.

Time to Flip for Summer!

I don't know about the rest of the country, but here in Vegas it is starting to feel like spring/summer. If the winds would just die down a little we would have a few gorgeous days. I even have my first sunburn of the season to prove it. Time to break out the sunscreen!

Along with warm weather comes fun summer shoes. But in this economy, who has the money to spend big money on everyday shoes. We have the perfect solution! Our adorable boutique flips flops are perfect for anyone that can walk with flip flops on their feet. I say that because my 3 year old is still trying to master that task.

We are so excited to finally kick off our first class for 2009. There will be many more coming in the next couple of weeks. But we thought we would start off with our most popular request.

Over the years, we have sold thousands of boutique bows. And often our customers would say "I wish I knew how to make bows." So what better way to start off our new party adventure then to offer our "Basics of Bows" class.

You will learn everything you need to know to make 6 different styles of boutique bows and hair accessories. We have tried many different methods, materials, glues, etc. over the years and have come up with our favorite finds in all areas of bowmaking. And now we are passing it onto all of you! A New Chapter

As the old saying goes, when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade.

The implementation of the CPSIA forced me to make a very difficult decision. As many of you know, I've decided to discontinue my children's clothing and accessories line. But I just couldn't lay down and let the government kick me like a tired old dog. I have put blood, sweat and tears into my business {and a few bottles of wine after some stressful months}. Hey, no judging, I was vulnerable. I have learned a lot along the way and now my head is full of information that needs to be passed on. Plus to be honest, my husband is tired of listening to me talk about fabrics, notions, pattern grading and the what silhouette will be hot next season.

So, the new Molly O Designs is reborn. I have taken my knowledge, fabrics, patterns, ribbons, buttons and any other supply that is stacked in my design studio, and created trendy and creatively chic sewing and craft parties for a generation of women who never learned how to thread a needle.

Now, I know what image just popped into your head. Frumpy, polyester wearing, home perm getting, no makeup wearing stay-at-home mom. No way sister! Let's start again.

Imagine, a mom's night out. Fun, trendy women who are getting together for cocktails, gossip and a night of learning to make the "hottest" new boutique items. And I'm not just talking about things for your kids. How about boutique designs for you, your house, gifts for teachers, friends and family. Chic, "must have" items that cost $100's in a boutique. If you don't have a little girl to buy for, maybe you could buy something and put it in your gift closet. Birthday parties, baby showers, new baby gifts are always popping up. And I know as a new mom I loved receiving clothing that was 18-24 months. By time your little one gets to that size you have nothing left from your baby shower!

Also, I have been receiving a lot of emails from other designers saying, "what are you doing, you don't have to sell it all off, there is a Stay of Execution for the next year and we are fine." Ummmm, not really. As of February 10th, the law still applies unless you have a garment without any snaps, buttons, zippers, etc. And most of my designs indeed have those things. So I MUST sell them before Tuesday or I will have to throw them out.

I thought her mention of groups actually working with attorney generals to find people violating the law was a little disturbing. In a state like Nevada where the funds have literally dried up and there are more lawyers then houses, there is NO WAY I would take a chance trying to fly under the radar on this one. The state attorney generals are looking at this as a way to make money via the fines they will issue to violators of this law. I don't know about anyone else, but I would like to keep my house and my car and my bank account..................

I know, I know, I'm getting off my soap box now. But I'm not too proud to beg a little. Please, please, please tell everyone you know about our sale. Send it in an email, post it on message boards or your blog. I will be forever grateful.

Better Late Then Never. Great News on the CPSIA front!

Finally some good news!The CPSC put out a statement today giving us more guidance on the law specifically as it pertains to textiles/fabrics. This is a great step forward in providing relief for clothing designers.

As stated in the press release:

Manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers should also be aware that CPSC will:

Not impose penalties against anyone for making, importing, distributing, or selling

*a children’s product to the extent that it is made of certain natural materials, such as wood, cotton, wool, or certain metals and alloys which the Commission has recognized rarely, if ever, contain lead;

*an ordinary children’s book printed after 1985; or

*dyed or undyed textiles (not including leather, vinyl or PVC) and non-metallic thread and trim used in children’s apparel and other fabric products, such as baby blankets.

(The Commission generally will not prosecute someone for making, selling or distributing items in these categories even if it turns out that such an item actually contains more than 600 ppm lead.)

O-kay, so what does this mean for us? Well, it means that if I were to make a dress that didn't have any snaps, buttons, zippers, etc. that I don't have to test it. Super great news! Except that I've already started to shut down this part of my business and pursue a new venture (stay tuned for that update by the way!). I so wish that they would've made this decision months ago before companies started closing their doors. But hopefully, it isn't too late.

I actually received a phone call from an aid in Senator Harry Reid's office tonight. I was impressed that they were taking note of how this law is effecting their constitutes. They actually read the article written by Glenn Cook in the Las Vegas Review Journal.

He asked what I thought about this new development. He also had questions about my thoughts on testing methods including using the XRF gun and testing at the component level. This tells me that they are listening. I felt like it was a productive conversation or at the very least I got to voice more of my concerns, thoughts and ideas. Which is all I want to do from the beginning.

I can't help but sit back and smile just a little tonight. We are far from the end of this, but I can't help but feel like we made a difference. All the emails, phone calls, product mailings, message boards, etc. made a difference. It is our own personal 2009 version of a sit in, email style. We yelled and they heard us. Let's just hope that they continue to listen and use wise judgement so that our children continue to be protected by this law, while well meaning business continue to not only survive but thrive.

Who Knew?

Did you know that a token system can help you determine your child's money management personality? Well it is true.

Working at home and being a full time mom has its challenges. The biggest being that you are working full-time, but your kids are also trashing your house full-time. When my 3 year old said "hey lady, I want some food!" as she was lounging on a pillow, I knew it was time for something to be done.

So we unplugged the tv. I know, mean mom. We painted some jars that we bought for $1.00 at Walmart and filled the big one with foam "tokens". They are really foam ball stickers, but whatever, they are worth their weight in gold right now. Each token is worth 15 minutes of tv. To earn tokens the kids must help me around the house. You wouldn't believe the things kids will do for a foam token. Oh yes, my 7 y.o. even offered to clean the toilets!

But the most interesting part of this little experiment was getting a sneak peek into my children's money management skills. My oldest, and the most soft hearted (7 y.o.) hords her tokens. She works hard, constantly asks what else she can do to help, but is scared to death to give up one of those tokens. As if by giving up one, the entire jar will disappear.

Our middle child (5 y.o.) has clearly been living in Vegas too long. The minute he earns a token, he is turning it in for 15 minutes of tv. I've tried to explain to him that he could watch an entire cartoon episode if he saved his token and earned another. No dice. He wants his tv and he wants it now. I think he is actually going through withdrawl. We set a timer for the amount of tv they are allowed to watch. He bursts into tears everytime that thing goes off. I'm sure I will have to pay for his therapy later in life. "My mom was so mean, she wouldn't even let me watch tv.........."

And the youngest (sigh). We like to call her Eloise. Those books could have been written about her (by the way did you know they were written about Liza Minelli? Who knew?!). Our 3 y.o. seems to be the brains behind this operation. She has swindled more tokens out of her brother and sister then she has actually earned. She can give them those big brown eyes and before you know it, they are opening their little jars and handing her their sacred tokens. Then she grins and yells, MOOOMMMMMM, I WANT TO WATCH TV NOW! I don't think this is working the way it is suppose to with her.

The moral of the story is, I'm teaching my kids a lesson about working hard to earn what you want. My house is a little cleaner which means I can get a little more work done. But I have to admit that I miss turning on a movie so I can jump on the computer for a little while (isn't that what the parenting books say to do?) LOL. So who is really getting the lesson here? I'm not sure but I think I just punished myself.

We won a battle!

And I say battle and not the war because there is still a LONG way to go before this is over. On January 30, 2009 the CPSC announced a Stay of Enforcement of Testing and Certification Requirements. This made many designers start dancing around their computers. And it is definitely a step in the right direction. So do your little dance my friend, I'm dancing right along side you.

Now, take a breath and let's get back to work! This stay essentially says that we do not have to test and provide testing certification until February 2010. HOWEVER, as stated by the CPSC: Manufacturers and importers – large and small – of children’s products will not need to test or certify to these new requirements, but will need to meet the lead and phthalates limits, mandatory toy standards and other requirements.

Ummmm, I'm thinking I would have to get them tested. Hmmmm, that doesn't sound quite right does it? So we have a catch 22. You don't have to test, but if you sell a garment with lead in the buttons, snaps or zippers, etc. that don't meet requirements then you better get out your check book for the fines.

I'm not trying to be Debbie Downer, I swear (though I have been called such names and worse). LOL. I truly from the bottom of my heart am trying to just lay it all out there so that NO ONE is in a situation where you are paying big fines or worse yet being sued by a family who claims their child was never the same after using your product. It is the sad reality of the world we live in.

But let's celebrate our battle victory. I think we can win this war. We just need to keep fighting!!! So keep writing your representatives and letting them know you support the Stay of Enforcement! Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) has also announce that he is sponsoring legislation to amend the CPSIA. So while you are in the mood, drop him a note as well and let him know that you are behind him 100%.

And just in case Tim Gunn from Project Runway is reading (Hi Tim, I LOVE YOU!) hee hee. Wouldn't this make a great Project Runway challenge?! All the designers must make garments for children that pass all CPSIA requirements. Oh, and you might want to get them tested just to be sure or be faced with a fine and an Auf Wiedersehen from Heidi. The only catch is you have a $30 budget. Make It Work!!!

Last week Alana Semuels of the LA Times called me and asked if I minded talking a little about how the CPSIA would effect my business. Of course by now you know that I will talk about this to anyone who will listen. I think my family was thrilled to have me give someone else an ear full of what I thought.

I was impressed with the questions she was asking. And had a good feeling about the piece she would write. So many journalists are only talking about how great it is that this law passed. And it is great to an extent. Who doesn't want our children to be safe?! But the other side of the story needs to be told as well. And that is exactly what Alana Semuels did. Her story is a great read and easy to understand. I think she got the attention of many consumers, business owners and parents.

The reason I know that her story reached far and wide is because after it was published the orders on my website started to pour in from all over the country. I can't thank her enough for giving this topic exposure and also indirectly promoting my business to help me through this difficult time. And thank you to all my customers who are supporting me by helping to clear out my inventory before February 9th. I wish I could thank each of you personally!

LA Times Story

Where has the time gone? The holidays have been a little crazy around here. My oldest has a birthday on Dec. 22nd (poor thing) and my youngest has a birthday on Jan. 6th. What was I thinking. It is like a month long marathon of birthday parties, Christmas events, wrapping presents and thank you notes. So that is my excuse for being gone so long :)

In the mean time, not much has changed on the CPSIA front. And February 9th is just around the corner. However, Glenn Cook of the Las Vegas Review Journal did an amazing job writing a column about this law and how it is effecting my business as well as other businesses in Las Vegas. If you have a second, it is a great read.

I was also just interviewed by the LA Times. Hopefully all this press will start to wake consumers up to the fact that we are about to lose a large portion of the children's apparel and toy industry. Very sad times indeed.

I'm the type of person that likes to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. I want to make sure all angles are covered and I don't get blindsided by anything. I have a gut feeling that amendments will not be made to the new CPSC law until after February 9th when more consumers start to take a stand. Right now, very few journalists, business owners, consumers and even designers know about this new law.

So, I am going to prepare. Everything on my website is 50%-75% off. I think I might have just shed a tear even typing that. And I have more spring styles to put up. So, buy it now while you can! After February 10th, it will be no longer. Or at the very least we will be on a break until some kind of reasonable amendment is instated.

Maybe Everything Happens for a Reason

I just spent about 20 minutes writing an update on the CPSIA battle. Just as I was about to post, I lost the entire entry! So frustrating. But I feel like maybe I need to slow down, relax, take a deep breath. And maybe you didn't want to hear my ramblings any how.

So here is the cliffnote version (do they still make cliffnotes?).

1. Don't believe everything you read. There are so many posts floating around the web about how people are exempt from the law if they work out of their home, work while no one sees them, only make left shoes or run in 5 circles counter clockwise before they start sewing. The law is the law. If you make something and sell it for a child, it needs to be tested. If you don't believe me, see the 800 number from yesterday's post and give them a call.

2. There may be a little hope in regards to testing between now and August. Not a huge break through, but a little glimmer of hope. You can use "reasonable testing" between now and August 2009. That doesn't mean a hardware store lead testing kit. That means a lab (does not have to be certified by the government) that uses testing applications such as the XRF gun. Much cheaper. But keep in mind you still have to go through the regular (insert expensive) testing in August. So it just buys you a little time. Here is a great article by Kathleen of Fashion Incubator.

3. Hmmm, I forget what my third point was. See, everything happens for a reason. I guess it wasn't that important.

Now, just a little something fun to take our mind off the craziness that has consumed us. My gorgeous friend Natalie just did a photoshoot with her singing group "Swing City Dolls". And she was nice enough to wear one of my Molly O aprons (only intended for moms therefore exempt from testing). See I told you there was something to smile about.

Don't Shoot the Messenger!

O-kay, I have to say that I have received many supportive emails regarding my business and how the CPSIA applies. However, I have also gotten a lot of nasty emails as well. Listen, I didn't make up the law. This isn't a conspiracy theory that I drummed up on my own. It is happening. The impact will be wide spread. Probably beyond what we are imagining even now.

So here is what I have to say. If you don't believe me, call! Here is the number:

CPSC Hotline: 1-800-638-2772 Ask to speak to someone about the CPSIA and how it will effect your business.

Call them and give whomever answers the phone your scenario. They will tell you how the new law applies to you.

In the meantime, let's try to get along. The point of writing about this on my blog was to bring together a community of designers, consumers, moms, etc. so that we could fight as one solid team. Not to spend time fighting amongst each other about whether you think the law will apply to you.

The hard facts are this. If you make ANYTHING that is intended for children ages 12 and under, you must have your product tested by a certified lab. The government is determining which labs will be used. This does not mean buying a lead testing stick at home depot. Once you have your product tested you must have the required lead tracking label attached. If your item does not have this label, you will not be able to legally sell it.

I feel like because I have taken the time to educate myself on the new law and wanted to share it with thousands of other people who it will effect, I'm the one put in front of the firing squad. Let's just try to all get along.

Congressional Hearing Canceled

I have to admit, I have been holding out hope that on December 10th, the representatives involved in the congressional hearing for the CPSIA would suddenly open their eyes and realize the devastation that is about to erupt throughout our economy. But sadly, the hearing has been canceled.

So what is next? I really have no idea. It seems consumers are supporting this law in hopes of providing safe toys and clothing for their children. And I couldn't agree more. As a mother of a child with Autism, I'm the first to get in line for all natural toys, clothing, food, etc. But, the law as written is overlooking the fact that many of these items do not need to be tested. Fabrics for example are inherently lead free. Yet, thousands of clothing companies are preparing to shut their doors because the cost to test their designs and prove they are lead free is simply too expensive.

Several European toy companies have already announced that they will stop production as of December 31, 2008 on all toys that typically sell in the U.S. Others have announced that the cost of their toys will increase between 30-50%. Clothing companies who can afford to test will now be offering fewer styles, colors and sizes. Gone will be beautifully embellished dresses or tshirts with appliques that use a variety of fabrics, trims and crystals. Did I mention that "bling" will be non-existent for little girls. Swarovski crystals are lead based. Need I saw more. Will we survive without "bling"? Absolutely. But the children's runways in New York will have a new look and feel. Basic, simple, few options. Period.

The bigger question is did congress just open Pandora's box. Where do we stop? What about the furniture our children sit on everyday, or the plates they eat off of, the floors they walk on and the beds they sleep in. Where do we draw the line?

I want a safer environment for my children. But I also want them to have choices. Most of all I want our economy to repair itself and thrive once again. This law is kind of like kicking a horse while it is down. I'm not sure how we are going to get back up after February 9th.

Write to your representative!

Congress will be meeting on December 10th to discuss the CPSIA regulation and the impact it will have on our economy. Below is the letter that I sent to my representative. It was written by a group of industry experts. While it may not apply directly to you if you are not a designer, you can feel free to change the opening to reflect your support.

I am writing on behalf of my self and other small manufacturers of children’s apparel and textile products throughout the United States to express our concerns regarding the lead and lead in paint standards as mandated by the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA).

We want to first emphasize that many of us are parents ourselves and care as much about the safety of our children as anyone. We welcome measures that will help to ensure greater child safety with regard to lead. However, such measures are only effective if they target the real risks.

Lead in children’s apparel and other textile products pose little risk

There is very little research to support the notion that lead in textiles presents a significant risk to children. On the contrary, in his presentation to the May 13, 2008 Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) roundtable, Understanding the Pending Legislation and the Use of Lead in Consumer Products, Mr. Hardy Poole makes the argument that the lead content in textiles is actually very low. Mr. Poole, president of the National Textile Association, is considered a leading expert in the textile industry with than 30 years of experience including working with the CPSC on fabric flammability standards.

In his presentation, Mr. Poole cited dyes, dyestuffs and pigments used in coloring fabrics as the primary source of lead in textiles and pointed out that the dyes produced by the major suppliers to the U.S. textile industry are already required to comply with the standards for trace metal impurities. These standards allow a maximum lead content of 100 ppm, which is well below the CPSC interim goal of 300 ppm and consistent with the ultimate goal of 100 ppm. Mr. Poole added that these suppliers offer no lead complex dyes and that he knows of no operation in the United States using lead-based pigments in the dyes produced for the textile industry. Currently, there is no lead added to yarns or fabrics manufactured domestically. Regarding imported textiles, Mr. Poole indicated that the testing of imported fibers and fabrics reveal none or only trace levels of lead.

It is important for the CPSC to recognize that the majority of the materials used to manufacture apparel and other textile products are inherently lead-free. Textiles (both synthetic and natural) and thread are inherently lead-free. While trace elements may be found in some dyes, those amounts are well below the regulatory limits and the consensus in the industry is that lead is not found in or used in textile dyes. Even if trace materials existed in the materials used to produce the textiles, very little would remain on finished fabrics because of the low application levels and the washing that occurs during processing.

Without prudent regulation and clear guidance from the CPSC, the CPSIA will result in unintended and devastating consequences to manufacturers of children’s products that pose little to no risk of lead exposure to children.

The costs of unnecessary testing and its impact on our businesses
Requiring expensive tests on inherently lead-free products to verify that they, in fact, don’t contain lead will only add financial burdens to small manufacturers and ultimately consumers – most of whom are already suffering from the current economic climate – while providing no improvement in consumer or product safety.

We recognize that some types of children’s apparel contain components that may contain lead. However, metal, painted plastic, and vinyl components in children’s apparel (painted and/or metal buttons, snaps, zippers, decals, etc.) are adequately regulated under the requirements for third party testing for lead in paint.

The CPSC has the authority to exclude components and classes of products from the lead ban. Accordingly, we urge the CPSC to issue guidance that makes clear that textiles and apparel are only subject to the lead and lead in paint requirements to the extent that a component presents a risk that it contains lead.

We are also concerned about the apparent requirement to test the component – both as a stand alone component and also as an element of the entire garment. This redundancy greatly multiplies the cost associated with testing.

For example, the cost of digestive testing for lead is in the range of $130 to $180 per test. A garment with two metal component parts, such as a zipper and snaps, would have to test each component separately at a cost of $360. Previously, a small manufacturer might have been spread these costs out over several styles by incorporating the same zippers and snaps into several styles. Let’s assume a manufacturer produces 10 styles. Now, with new regulations that require testing of each component part after it is removed from a sample garment, one in each style, the costs of testing increase dramatically to $3,600.

These costs multiply exponentially if companies are now required to test fabrics and threads for lead, or if different dyes also trigger their own lead tests. Going back to the previous example, if each style contains six components – body fabric, lining, knit cuff, thread, snap, and zipper, as well as 5 possible dye options – the number of tests increases to more than 300, or $108,000 to for just 10 styles in addition to the actual costs of production. Any small manufacturer that survives these costs – and there aren’t many of us that can – will necessarily have to pass them on to our customers. So, consumers end up on the losing end, too.

CPSC should exempt lead testing for those components and articles that are inherently lead-free and require testing for only those components that may contain lead.

And, what do we do with our inventories?
In its September 12 memorandum in which CPSC general counsel advised that “products that contain lead above the limit set in the CPSIA cannot be sold from inventory or on store shelves on or after February 10, 2009.”

Many of us operate on extremely small margins. We cannot sell the merchandise we currently have in stock that we made prior to the standards ever having been approved, nor can we afford the testing required for each and every component of a finished product on top of the cost for testing the finished product – the vast majority of which are inherently lead-free or only present trace levels of lead, well below unsafe or regulatory limits. Requiring us to dispose of all our inventory and imposing huge testing costs on producing new inventory to replace it will force many of us to shut down our operations for good.

What happens to us will effect the U.S. Economy

Based on an analysis of 2002 U.S. Census data, which is the most current available for the apparel manufacturing industry, the Cut and Sew Apparel Manufacturing industry, which includes most categories of small manufacturers of infant’s and children’s apparel, is comprised of more than 40,000 companies. Of these, almost 28,000, or 68%, are sole proprietors contributing a total of $900 million to our nation’s economy. Thus, while our businesses are small, they comprise well more than the majority of the apparel manufacturing businesses currently operating in this country.

In addition to small manufacturers who work with apparel industry contractors, consider also the numerous home-based businesses that produce children’s apparel and sell directly to the consumer. These businesses are best characterized as “micro-manufacturers” who commonly produce several styles but in very small quantities. For these businesses to test for lead in every textile component of each and every style would exponentially increase the costs to produce a garment, which would effectively raise the price well beyond what the market will bear. They simply cannot survive these costs.

While it is important to ensure compliance under the CPSIA, at the same time, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) must also ensure that implementation of consumer product safety standards does not involve burdensome requirements or extraordinary costs.

Unfortunately, by exempting this rulemaking from the requirements of the Administrative Procedure Act and the Regulatory Flexibility Act, which would require the CPSC to prepare and make available for public comment an initial regulatory flexibility analysis that describes the impact of the lead content testing rule on small apparel manufacturing businesses, Congress has circumvented the public discourse necessary to truly ascertain the CPSIA’s impact on small business. As written, the CPSIA ignores the wide variety of small business models that comprise the children’s apparel manufacturing industry and the fact that the majority are indeed small businesses.

Every small manufacturer of children’s apparel shares the goal of the CPSC – ensuring that only safe products are permitted to reach the consumer. We believe this is best achieved by implementing and enforcing the CPSIA (specifically the lead and lead in paint standards) in a manner that focuses on risks.

Although I am sending this letter to you as an individual, I can assure you that these comments share the support of many others who, like me, want to continue providing necessary and safe products to American consumers. While we believe there are some components in textile and apparel products that may fall under the lead standards, we believe the vast majority of products and components are inherently lead-free and should thus be excluded from the standards.

We urge the CPSC to issue guidance that makes clear that textiles and apparel are only subject to the lead and lead in paint requirements to the extent that a component presents a risk that it contains lead.

In just 70 short days Molly O Designs may be forced to shut our doors along with thousands of other children's manufacturers.

February 9th has been deemed National Bankruptcy day. The reason is due to the CPSIA regulations going into effect. How does this effect Molly O Designs. Well, I'm happy you asked.

The CPSIA regulations will mandate that all manufacturers of children's goods (even little ol'Molly O) will be required to have our products tested for lead. Now, at first glance this sounds like a great idea! Safety for our children. But then you look at the numbers. For Molly O Designs to have our Spring/Summer 2009 tested to meet federal standards, the testing will run us over $30,000. That is just for the testing! Not the manufacturing, or the purchasing of materials or everyday overhead expenses.

This regulation will cover EVERYONE who produces products intended for children ages 12 and under. Do you make baby blankets to sell at craft fairs? You will have to pay to have them tested. Do you sew custom boutique clothing on ebay? You will have to pay to have your designs tested. What about those cute baby bibs that everyone keeps asking you to make? If you sell them for money, they have to be tested!

Needless to say, thousands of entrepreneurs and businesses will go under on February 9th. But where will all their inventory go? In the dump. That is right. If you produced anything prior to February 9th and it has not been tested and approved, it will be considered hazardous waste on February 10th. All my beautiful spring clothes? In the garbage. I'm not kidding. And yes, this sounds too crazy to be true, but trust me, it is a very real reality.

So, I will stop being a selfish for a moment and not think about what I will lose personally. Let's talk about the children's consignment shop down the street that will have to close its doors because for all practical purposes everything in it will be a hazardous dumping site. What about the children's boutique that has a store full of inventory that can't be sold after February 9th? I have many friends who sell clothing and toys on ebay to make a living. Again, all garbage.

I really can't wrap my head around the enormity of this issue and what this means for our already failing economy.

I have learned so much while working on this! And had a lot of help along the way. I can't wait for the day where I can hand 100% of the design, photography, editing, etc. over to someone else. But as the business is just beginning to grow, I seem to be the jack of all trades when it comes to this area of my business. I'm by no means an expert, but I think I've learned enough to get by.

So now on to the next step, marketing!! I'm so excited to start showing my clothing line at in home Trunk Shows. It is such a fun way for moms to get together, have a girls night out and do a little shopping. It is like installing a children's boutique right in your house! Every girls dream, right? So, if you know anyone that is interested in hosting a Molly O Trunk Show, send them our way.

I'm going to keep this short and sweet tonight. It has been a long week. I'm fighting off a migraine as I type, but have a little more work to do tonight. I did however just tuck in my 2 year old and sang her a lulabye. She actually put her head on my shoulder and fell asleep. We have nicknamed her Eloise because of all the shenanigans she gets into during the day, most recently painting large pictures with nail polish all over the girl's new comforters and throw pillows. BUT, when she puts her head on my shoulder, she turns into the sweetest curly haired angel ever. Those are the moments I will cherish. Good night and I hope everyone has sweet angel dreams.

Where did the summer go?

The summer went by in a blur. And I say blur because having 3 kiddies at home all day, everyday, tends to make your eyes cross. But now that 2 of the 3 are firmly seated back in their desks, I can finally get a little extra work done. By extra work, I mean catching up on email, my blog, message boards, etc. You know, all the important things in life :)

With school back in session, it seems that the Molly O customers of the world are ready to shop! I've had a sudden surge in website traffic, purchases and inquiries. I can't tell you how excited I am to get our new line in everyone's hands! Speaking of, I'm so excited to say that Molly O Designs was featured in a very fab and trendy magazine this week called BLVDS Las Vegas. If you like in Las Vegas, try to pick up a copy at Borders. It is the perfect magazine for posh moms in the area. I was excited to see that 3 of my photos/designs were used throughout the magazine!
You can go to my website to read an little blurb from the article. And maybe just to make things a little interesting, the first person that can tell me which 3 pages my photos can be found on will win one of our new Creative Clips. If you don't live in Vegas and can't get to the magazine, take a guess, you never know you might get it right! It is Vegas after all. LOL.

And just for the fun of it, I have to show you the photos I took a few nights ago. Our family was having a little bonding time watching the sun set from our backyard. I don't know what I enjoyed more, the sunset or the beautiful looks on all their sweet little faces. It was definitely a night I will remember long after they are all grown.

The glamorous life of a designer

Oh what a glamorous life I lead. Designing clothing, meeting with pattern makers, manufacturers, sourcing new fabric, it is all very chic (insert sound of record screaching to a halt). O-kay, the reality is that I do all those things while being at home with my three wild, I mean lovely children. It is FAR from glamorous. In fact, most days if someone were to peek through my windows they would either call for back up, or hurt themselves from laughing so hard.

I don't know if this is the norm, but it isn't uncommon for me to be in the middle of a phone meeting while cleaning up the syrup that my youngest used to decorate the entire house. Really? How does a 2 y.o. empty and entire bottle of syrup (just opened that morning) within 30 seconds. Doesn't it take that long just to turn it over and start to squeeze? Have you ever tried to wash syrup out of the hair of a little girl that has curls like Shirley Temple? Oh the glamorous life I lead. I have decided to start calling our youngest Eloise because of the things that go through her little 2 y.o. mind. But when she falls asleep.........ahhh, my sweet little angel appears.

But, in the mean time, I'll go back to pretending that when all is quiet like I have a chic loft office where my designs are the talk of the towb, towm, sorry to TOWN. I guess the syrup founds it's way to my computer keys as well. Good thing I store all my designs elsewhere!

Boutique Portraits!

I always hated the way my school pictures turned out. My hair never looked right, my shirt was looking a little off, I wasn't totally smiling...........I could go on and on. And yes, I will admit I have school pictures with the BIG bangs. Does that give away my age?! I worked on that "poof" for at least a half hour before leaving the house. I wonder if my husband has ever seen those pictures. Well, I'm guessing the answer is no since he is still married to me. LOL.

So, Bijou & Co. came up with a fool proof way to make sure your little sweetie has the perfect school picture. O-kay, maybe it won't actually be taken at school, but you can put it in her scrapbook and she will forever love you for capturing the perfect picture! In fact, she might even be willing to show it to her future husband!!

Run, run, run

When you have kids, is there ever a day where you just get to rest? I have been running non-stop today. From one end of the city to the other. Whew. I just need a minute to catch my breath. My poor green shoes almost melted off my feet. Yes, it is that hot today! And, by the way, my 6 y.o. took the picture of the shoes. She loves photography and always gets some interesting shots. LOL.

Why am I writin on my blog instead of resting? This is restful to me. I love to write (have I ever told you I have a Journalism degree?) Yes, I'm full of all kinds of surprises. Writing is a skill that can get a little rusty if you don't practice. And I am definitely rusty. Like the tinman in the Wizard of Oz. I need a lot of oil. In fact, maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the Journalism degree. Now, I'm going to be getting comments about my spelling and grammar. LOL. Don't waste your key strokes, I already know.

On the business front, I am sewing my very last sample piece for Fall 2008! It will be in the mail, on the way to a sweet little model any day now. Then, I will need to focus all my efforts on MARKETING! I'm not very good at the hard sell, or the soft sell for that matter. But, I'm going to have to buckle down and really focus on getting my line out there.

I've decided not to sell wholesale at this time. I'm going to be focusing on my online sales as well as doing trunk shows. I LOVE doing trunk shows. You get to interact with your customers and get real time feedback on your designs. Sometimes it isn't always easy to hear the constructive critism, but it is always helpful. On the flip side, hearing a customer swoon over your designs can inflate your ego for days, even weeks.

So, if you know anyone in the Las Vegas or surrounding area that wants to host a Molly O trunk show, send them my way! If you know anyone that may want to become a Molly O Stylist (aka sales rep) and host their own trunk shows any where in the U.S. send them my way too! Our goal is to build a sales force nationally over the next two years. Marketing, marketing, marketing (good thing my major was Journalsim and Public Relations, I'm going to be putting it to good use!).

I Love Customer Pictures!

Have I ever told you how much I love getting pictures of little girls in my designs?! Seriously, it makes my day, week, month. LOL. There is nothing like seeing a sweet little girl twirling, running, posing in a Molly O. O-kay, maybe it is a ego thing. But it really makes me feel good.

I was cleaning some of the files on my computer and came across this sweet photo sent in last summer by one of my customers. What a adorable little girl and a talented mommy! In fact, I just commissioned them to model/shoot some of my fall line. Don't worry, I'll post the pics as soon as I have them!

Doesn't this just make you want to pack your bags and head for the beach! I'm sitting here in 108 degree weather with smoke from the California wild fires settled in the Las Vegas valley. I'm just going to stare at this photo and pretend like I'm in a lounge chair with a nice cold drink. Ahhhhh.

HUGE Summer Sale!

So I just handed off all my fall samples to the manufacturer tonight! Woo Hoo! What a great feeling! I have a few more that are going out to be modeled but other then that, my fall line is out of my hands (insert huge sigh of relief).

But now I need to clear out all my summer inventory to make room for the new fall boutique lines (wait until you see what is coming for Fall 2008!). I have to say one of the dresses for fall is my all time FAVORITE dress. I hope all my customers love it just as much!

Mid-Year Resolutions

I don't think I made any New Year's resolutions this year, so maybe it is appropriate if I make some middle of the year resolutions. LOL. I swear I have good intentions to get so many things done. I have a list a mile long of all the things I would love to accomplish. And yet, it seems like I'm lucky to place any checks on that list at all. So, here are a few of my middle of the year, get myself in gear to accomplish a few things before another month goes by resolutions:

1. Post more then once every 3 weeks on my blog. Check! I have tons of new things coming for Fall 2008 including my ready to wear childrens boutique line! I have lots of material for my blog, so everyone bug me until I get it all posted.

2. Finish decorating my house. Wait, maybe I should break this resolution down to rooms. It seems like most of the rooms in my house are 75% done. Which means when you add them all up I have half a house to decorate. LOL. I just started taking down the wallpaper in our guest bathroom yesterday. Hmmmm, maybe not such a good idea since I have 2 chairs recovered in the kitchen and 2 with the old fabric (imagine 3 toddlers, lots of cheerios, spilled milk and all the other crusty/stickies that go with kids). Yum! Oh, and there is the newly converted playroom which still has a framed print that is from a vineyard. Hmmm, that doesn't really mix does it? Kids and wine decorations. Well, sometimes I drink wine after a long day with the kids, does that count? O-kay, I'm off track from my resolution already. Finish decorating my house. Check.

3. GET IN SHAPE!!! I know everyone says this, but really I can only use the excuse "I had 3 kids in 4 years" so many times. The baby is 2 1/2, time to get over it and stop looking like a Oompa Loompa!

4. Get ahead on my clothing line. This is a big one. I have a wonderful manufacturer that has been doing a lot of last minute things for me. BUT, I really need to get out of my comfort zone and plan at least 9 months ahead on my line. Which means, as soon as I hand off the rest of my samples tomorrow to my pattern maker, I need to book a trip to the LA fabric district to start shopping fabric for Spring/Summer 2009. Anyone in the mood to shop?

I think that is a pretty good list to start, right? Who wants to hold me accountable? Anyone else want to join me? My challenge to you is to do your own Mid-Year Resolution list on your blog. It will make you feel good to take inventory of your life.

It's Summer Time!

Can you believe the school year is already over?! I don't know where the time went. But I do know that I am frantically putting the finishing touches on my fall 2008 line! Can you believe that I'm thinking about fall clothes in June? Well I actually started designing, looking for fabric and creating back in February! The back to school shopping season is just around the corner. So my samples are heading off to my manufacturer in Los Angeles so they can make it back in time for the Fall Molly O Trunk Shows. More to come on when and where our boutique pieces will be available.

But in the meantime, we are still thinking warm, relaxing summer thoughts! That is until the peace is interrupted by 3 screaming children who are already bored after being home for one day. LOL. Scream they may, but you can still make sure they look adorable when you venture out to summer parties and on vacation.

It's the little things!

Like many working mothers, I'm often in a rush to get something done. I take multi-tasking to a whole new level. What I fail to remember is that when you rush, you typically make mistakes. Which means, spending even more time fixing the new problem.

When I have a new design that needs to get photographed, all I'm thinking of is how can I squeeze in a photoshoot inbetween school pickups, homework, doing the dishes, sending out orders and answering emails? Oh, and when is the lighting just right for me to shoot outdoors? Well, as you will see my photos were not the best. I'm not saying they were bad, but I didn't take the time to pay attention to the little things.

BEFORE

Hmmmmm, not feeling just right. The dress is so much cuter in person (I swear!). So, let's see...........add a small pettiskirt so customers can see the fullness. Make a cute sailor hat to match and drive over to the local lake. There, that's a little better. And VOILA!

AFTER

So take the time to look at the little things. They do make a difference and will save you time in the end!

Have I ever told you.........

About my sweet, adorable, pirate loving, sensitive son Clay? Clay is my teacher in this world. He sees so much that I am blind to. He communicates in a way that has a much deeper meaning, if you take the time to really absorb what he wants to tell you. He has my husband's beautiful brown eyes and what we like to call his "hot lips". He wears a belt, sword and pirate hat everywhere we go. But takes the time to hug his sisters if they are crying.

April was Autism Awareness month. I feel like I have heard the word Autism more times then I care to count in the last two years. I remember the first time I really heard the word. Two years ago. Just two short years ago we heard the words, "I'm sorry, your son has autism." In my gut, in my heart, in my soul I knew they were right. But hearing that word brought out so many emotions. First, I said o-kay, what do we do now? Happy to have an answer to the thousands of questions that went through my head everyday. Why doesn't Clay talk? Why doesn't he turn his head when I say his name even if I scream? Why won't he touch his stuff animals or let the carpet touch his hands? Why won't he eat anything except crackers, pasta and bread? Why, why, why????? We finally had an answer! I almost felt happy as we left the doctor's office.

And then I woke up the next morning and started to cry. And cry and cry and cry. I did not stop crying for 2 weeks. In hind sight I think I went through a grieving process. No one tells you about this at your babyshower when you are playing "Guess How Huge Molly's Stomach Is?!". You plan for what you think is the "perfect" child. Instead you get God's perfect child. Everyone tells you to start a college fund. No one tells you that the therapy involved with Autism causes many families to sell their home or take out a second mortgage. No one tells you that instead of spending time going to gymboree classes and having playdates, that you will try to avoid all those things so you don't have to explain the tantrums that come from having sensory overload.

I grieved by crying and then going into denial and then getting really angry. And now, I just feel utter and complete love and hope. Yes, there are days that I really worry about what the future holds for Clay. And other days where I see so much progress and I see what he is capable of and say to myself, "he is going to be alright." I still don't have all the answers, but one thing I do know is that Clay was put in our family for a reason. It seems that the reason changes on a daily basis, but that just shows how much he teaches all of us.

We never say Clay is Autistic. He has Autism. We are almost ready to say he "had" Autism. Clay is in recovery. We fight Autism every single day, but he is winning. Through therapy, diet and lots of love we are meeting our son. I say that I met my son for the first time when he was 3 1/2. That is the day that we broke through the wall of autism and Clay looked me in the eyes. I will never forget that day and I will never forget the look in those beautiful brown eyes.

Autism affects 1 in 150 children, 1 in 94 boys! There are so many wonderful organizations out there that are making huge strides in finding the answer to all of our questions of "why?". I'm part of an amazing group of women on www.bijouamericano.com who have taken it upon themselves to raise money for these amazing groups. They are holding an online charity event right now to raise money for Autism Awareness. All seriousness aside, this is a group of fun and CRAZY women! We chat daily and even well into the night. We are a group of moms just trying to make it through the day. Because, whether you had a child with autism, or a typical child let's face it we all need a sanity check once in a while! LOL.

Journal Modiste - Designer of the Week!

It is finally here! My interview on Journal Modiste is now live! If you have a second, click on over to Journal Modiste and read my interview. You can even leave a comment at the end (as long as it is nice). LOL.

A special thanks to Amy who runs JM for selecting me as the Designer of the Week. It truly is a honor.

On another note, I can't believe how fast spring and summer is approaching! I'm frantically trying to get my Fall 2008 line out. Believe it or not, even though it is only April I am LATE getting my line sheets out to boutiques compared to other designers. But, I'm just going to do what I can and see what happens. I'm praying there are a few boutiques left that haven't blown their budget for the fall. If they have, then I will just produce a limited edition line that will be available on my website. That is the beauty of growing my business slowly. I don't have a huge business loan or $40,000 in production costs to be worrying about. My manufacturer has been amazing about allowing me to produce small runs on my designs. This gives me the flexibility to grow at my own comfort.

But with all the rush of producing a line MONTHS in advance of the selling season, it makes me wonder when do "moms" want to buy their kids clothes? Do you wait until June to buy a summer dress. Or are you the mom who buys summer dresses starting in February? I would love to hear from you whether you are a mom, boutique owner or anyone in between. How far in advance to you plan your purchases?

I'm feeling a little Sentimental..........

As most of you know, I'm a member of an amazing design group called Bijou & Co. This week we are celebrating our one year anniversary!!! Our launch, Sentiments, started today with a rather impressive guest list. Each of us invited an outside designer that inspired us. Which really means, a designer that we tend to stalk because we love what they do! LOL. O-kay, not as creepy as it sounds. But we all have our favorite designers!

So, our challenge was to design something that made us Sentimental. My first dress was based on this sweet polka dot dress I had as a little girl. I loved this dress! I felt like a million bucks when I wore it. It was just a white knit fabric with polka dots. If I remember correctly, my mom bought it for me for a wedding we were going to. As a little girl, new dresses were few and far between. Hand-me-downs were the norm. But this dress came from a little boutique in our small town. I will never forget buying that dress.

So I came up with a design that will hopefully make some little girl feel just as special. The auction started today, but make sure to check back throughout the week as I list the matching little sister set, hair accessories and my first set that arrived from the manufacturer!! Let me tell you, it is pure heaven to open a box FULL of dresses that I did not spend hours making. LOL. They are gorgeous. Every stitch is perfect. And they are ready to ship! :) Stay tuned for photos...............

Dreaming in Color

I often have customers ask me how I come up with my designs. They are usually surprised at my answer, or look at me a little crazy. LOL. I would say 80% of my designs come from my dreams. I will have a detailed dream about a design and wake up and sketch as fast as I can. I'm always afraid that I'm going to forget some detail. Now, I'm not the best artist in the world so my sketches are definitely rough, but they make sense to me. And as long as I can make them come to life in my design world, that is really all that matters.

But I also think that many of my dreams come from some kind of inspiration I saw the day before. I love looking through fashion magazines, vintage designs, fashion color forecasts, etc. I will see something that catches my eye and then instantly think of a children's design that could play off that silhouette, color, style, etc. Many designers give themselves a creative block by forcing themselves to come up with a design no one has ever seen before. The reality is, it is very rare that something you come up with is truly 100% original. It may have the same lines or feel as something from the 1800's, or the 1980's :) My point is, designers shouldn't stress themselves out coming up with a new look over and over. Find a silhouette that you love and play off of it. Change the neckline, sleeve, hemline or the details. And before you know it, you will have something that is uniquely yours!

My friend J from Jaybird Designs just tagged me! Thanks for thinking of me J and putting me on the spot! Hmmmmm, this could be interesting (or maybe really boring). LOL.

Here are the rules:

So, here ya go! Seven random things about me:
1. My favorite snack right now is Korean Seaweed (Nori) It has to be the salted kind or I won't eat it. My 2 youngest kids are hooked on it too. You should see the looks we get at the park when we are eating sheets of seaweed like chips!

2. My DH and I are both from Michigan but now live in Las Vegas. I don't think you could pick 2 places that are further apart in lifestyles!

3. I'm a classically trained dancer. But, I have learned to never say "I use to be a dancer" here in Vegas. You get some really interesting looks and a few moms at playgroup who offer up their old "stage" name. Ummm, enough said. LOL.

4. I put myself through college by competing in the Miss America program. Loved the scholarship money! Didn't love the "sticky buns" that you sprayed on before the swimsuit competition. Yes, that is actually true not a pageant myth. And yes, I have seen girls accidentally glue themselves to a toilet after using it and forgetting they just sprayed glue on their tushes :)

5. In my previous life I had a career in corporate public relations. I wore a suit, nylons and high heels every day. I had a secretary that answered my phone and my purse matched my briefcase. Now, I'm lucky to have a shirt on that doesn't have some remnant of my children's breakfast. But I wouldn't change it for the world. O-kay, I might trade it for a few hours at the spa, but what work at home mother wouldn't?!

6.My designs are currently being produced by a manufacturer in LA and I couldn't be more excited!

7. O-kay, I ran out. I'm really not that interesting. LOL. Hmmmmm, how about they fact that I swore I would never had kids and I ended up having 3 kids in 4 years. That just goes to show you, never say never! :)

A big week ahead!

I have so many exciting things happening next week! First, I am being featured on Journal Modiste as their designer of the week. I can't even tell you how excited I am! Since I began making custom boutique clothing, I have been reading the interviews of so many designers on JM. I can't believe I get to join the ranks with so many amazing designers. What an honor! Next, I'm listing a romantic and sweet little set as part of Bijou & Co. launch called The Hamptons. The designs are inspired by a trip to The Hamptons. I've been saving this gorgeous italian lace for the perfect design and I think I finally did just that. I purchased this vintage italian lace from a couture designer I met. She had traveled Europe studying couture design techniques and picked up some FABULOUS fabric along the way. Last year she decided to move and offered to let me go through her fabric collection so she could clear it out (at a very discounted price). When I saw this lace, I couldn't believe my eyes. I've never seen or felt lace like this in person. The little girl that gets to wear this set will feel like she is on the runways in Milan or Paris. Here is a little sneak peek!

I love it when the children who will be wearing a Molly O custom design are involved in the design process!

I was asked recently to make a dress for a birthday party. Typically this means discussing designs, silhouettes, fabrics and colors with the mom. Not this time! The birthday girl herself had very strong opinions about what she wanted to wear for her party. So after looking through design samples she decided on a dress. Then it was time for color! We knew were going to use dupioni silk, so I pulled out over 140 color swatches. It was so much fun to watch her choose different colors and put combinations together. The end result was fabulous! She choose this gorgeous orange silk that has fuchsia threads that run through it. Then she found the perfect fuchsia to use for the trim. When the sunlight hits this dress, the orange silk turns pink. It is just stunning.

Who knows maybe in a few years she can intern for me!

Design Your Own Custom Outfit!

I have to admit, that this auction was created because I was down with that horrible flu for an entire week! And that was after taking care of 3 sick kids. So after a trip to the urgent care for some IV fluids, I became coherent again and realized there was no way I was going to have time to photograph my new designs for the current Bijou & Co. launch. What is a working mom to do? Let the customers have a little fun, that is what I say!

So, I've decided to list an auction where my customers get to design their own one-of-a-kind custom boutique outfit. The designs are based around the gorgeous new fabric by Sandi Henderson called Ginger Blossom. I will work with the winning bidder to create an adorable spring/summer set using this beautiful fabric. It's almost as much fun as being on Project Runway. O-kay, I'm going a little far, but it will be "fierce" (that is a Project Runway reference for those of you that don't watch). LOL.

Designing for Fall/Winter 2008-2009

Does it seem a little strange that we aren't even out of winter and set here I am sketching designs for next fall and winter?! But I'm learning quickly that you have to be way ahead of the game. While I am frantically trying to get Spring and Summer produced right now, I'm also trying to get all my designs together for next year. I can't let you in on any secrets yet, but I'm loving what I have come up with so far.

In the mean time, here is a little peak and some fabric that was sent off to production today. It will be a limited edition run for a few select boutiques, but I think it will be so sweet for pictures at the beach, a summer picnic or even the fourth of July!

My life is always a whirlwind, especially when you factor in the fact that I have a 2, 4 and 6 year old at home. Add in that my husband is starting a new business venture and now I'm taking my business to an entirely new level. I've made the decision to hand over my designs to a small manufacturer. Yes, Molly O Designs is going big time. Or at least big time in my mind. I'm sure Michael Kors would holding his stomach in pain while laughing at me, but you have to start somewhere (plus I love Michale Kors so he can laugh at me any time he wants!)

When I started in the direction of custom boutique children's clothing a year ago, I never imagined I would already be at this stage. But here I am! After months and months of research, business plan developement, creating a marketing and plan and about a thousand prayers, everything is finally in motion.

Last week, my amazing pattern maker finished a few of my summer patterns and all my fabric was drop shipped to the manufacturer. Now, I wait and pray. I'm scared to death that I will have a room full of boutique dresses that will never sell. But I guess fear of the unknown is one of the biggest motivators in our life.

I also had the pleasure of speaking with Jennifer Varner from www.pure-ecommerce.com to start the development of my new ecommerce website. I can't tell you how excited I am to get started. She has the talent and business knowledge that fits perfectly into my vision for Molly O Designs.

Some of my customers have been asking me "what about eBay?" I will continue to sell one-of-a-kind custom boutique clothing on eBay and etsy.com I find that both sites are an amazing testing ground for my designs. You will also be able to purchase directly from my new website as well as various online boutiques.

So over the next few months, the Molly O Designs blog may turn into "how to build a clothing business from the ground up" blog. I hope you enjoy the journey with me!

eBay Strike Feb. 18th - Feb. 25th: Support Your Boutique Designers!

Due to recent changes from ebay, many custom boutique sellers have decided to participate in the eBay strike. That means no buying or selling on eBay for one week from 02/18 until 02/25! Many of our Bijou and Co. designers are joining in on this strike.

A large group of custom boutique designers are coming together to sell on Etsy during this week. They also plan to continue selling on Etsy, following the strike. The great thing about Etsy is they charge lower fees for sellers, which translates to lower prices for buyers! There is no waiting for auctions to end, see something you like and buy it right then! Molly O Designs Jewelry has come to and end......

It is with a little sadness that I have decided to stop designing jewelry. As many of my customers know, Molly O Designs started as a custom jewelry business. Through the last couple of years, I have slowly transitioned over to children's boutique clothing and accessories. With the success of my clothing, I found very little time to create jewelry. So I have decided to sell everything!

What a undertaking this is proving to be. I'm in the process of photographing and listing all of my bead and jewelry inventory. I literally have thousands of beads to sell. Semi precious, pearls, sterling silver, bali silver, clasps, charms, etc. The list goes on and on. Not to mention all my displays and finished jewelry.

So, if you know anyone in the market for beads or jewelry send them over to my etsy store! I'm selling everything well below value just so I can clear that area of my office. I don't know about everyone else, but I feel the need to clear the clutter in the new year! Maybe I should take a picture of my office now as my "before" photo so I can show all of you my progress later on.

Is it time to think Spring already?

It seems like I haven't even recovered from Christmas yet, and here I am launching Easter dresses! I think subconsciously I'm hoping if I design warm weather outfits, beautiful spring days will follow. Believe it or not, we had ice on our drive way this morning. Did I mention we live in Las Vegas?! Usually this time of year brings blue skies and warm days, but this year it just isn't so.

Regardless, I know some of you are in the mood to shop for Easter! This dress is perfect for Easter Sunday, spring garden parties or even a summer wedding. You will be able to wear this through out all the warm weather months.

At Molly O Designs, we are all about promoting women to the fullest extent possible. That is why we are excited to announce the promotion of our youngest female executive to the position of Vice President of Customer Service. We thought it was time that someone with a take charge attitude and a willingness to please the customer was in charge.

It's all about the Shoes!!!

Which came first, the outfit or the shoes? The shoes of course! The amazing design group I am a part of, Bijou & Co. (search BJAC on ebay) is getting ready for another ebay launch. The theme this time? "It's all about the Shoes". Each designer is creating an outfit based on an adorable pair of shoes. I have seen a sneak peak of some of the designs and they are so adorable!!!

I have to admit that I am buried in orders and won't have as many pieces to launch this time around. However, I have the cutest pair of boys shoes and a design in my head that I am determined to bring to life! So keep your fingers crossed that I can find enough time (and fabric) to create a studly little design for the boys. Imagine Euro GQ meets argyle. So cute! Maybe I will even post a sneak peak of the shoes just to see if there is an interest. That is as soon as I remember to charge my camera battery. So much to sew, so little time.

We have recently been asked by http://www.sparklinlilstars.com/ children's boutique to carry the Molly O Designs fall 2007 line. Up until this point, I have turned down requests by boutiques to carry our one-of-a-kind children's designs simply because I didn't feel like it was a good business fit. But, http://www.sparklinlilstars.com/ fits my business vision and strategy for http://www.mollyodesigns.com/ and I felt like it would be a great partnership! Sure enough, as soon as they posted the Molly O Halloween set, the custom orders came in.

I'm truly looking forward to expanding my business with them further. Right now I'm trying to focus on getting all my custom fall and Christmas orders out so I can then start creating high end custom boutique designs for Spring 08. I have tons of ideas sketched on paper, I just need to turn them into a reality! So stay tuned!!!

Pay It Forward!

I've been so blessed lately to have some wonderful people cross my path. Each has openly and freely given me advice on the workings of the design industry. They have been generous and so sweet!

First, I want to acknowledge Jan Rousseaux of House of Rousseaux! She is truly becoming a mentor to me. We were introduced by a mutual friend and are working on a wonderful charity together http://www.hopeforhearts.net/

She has so much knowledge and experience. She too started her design career as a stay at home mom. She began sewing out of her home and in the years since has dressed the runways of New York, designed couture and ready to wear. Her latest venture is a line of gorgeous and chic Christmas stockings. I will post photos as soon as we have them (we are doing a photoshoot together tomorrow!). You will be blown away by how gorgeous and luxurious they are! Needless to say she is truly an inspiration to me both in career and faith.

Secondly, I also want to say a special thanks to Kimberly Mac. Another couture designer whom I met through Jan :) Small world! She is in the process of moving and gifted to me the most amazing fabric chest. I can't even describe this piece other then to say it is enormous! I can't tell you how excited I am to have ALL my fabric in one place. This custom chest stands 6ft. tall and 64 inches wide. That's right, for those of you that design/sew you know that I can store entire bolts of fabric in these drawers! We adopted this piece on Sat. and all 8 drawers are already full! Kimberly also shared gorgeous fabrics with me that she had collected from around the world. I can not wait to start designing with them! Kimberly has done extensive couture work but most recently launched a new menswear line with http://www.muifina.com/

So the moral of this post is theconcept of helping each other. As I always say, there is more then enough business to go around. So share your knowledge and talents. You never know when the favor will be payed forward to you.
